Postupak se odvija u omek\u0161iva\u010dima vode, posudama pod tlakom, koji su ispunjeni jako kiselom ionskom masom. Ionska je masa zasi\u0107ena natrijevim ionima koji se u kemijskom procesu izmjene otpu\u0161taju, a masa na sebe ve\u017ee ione kalcija I magnezija iz vode. Na taj se na\u010din obiva voda bez kalcija i magnezija odnosno bez ukupne tvrdo\u0107e.
